Career Academy students join Deputy Prime Minister to talk Social Mobility

Friday 13 January

Fourteen Career Academy students met with Nick Clegg, the Deputy Prime Minister yesterday as he addressed over 100 top chief executives and directors to promote the Government’s Social Mobility Business Compact.

The Deputy Prime Minister urged employers to sign the Business Compact and commit to do more to support young people by volunteering with schools, mentoring, providing paid internships and transparent recruitment.

Daniel Clarke, a former Career Academy student from Sir George Monoux in Walthamstow, who undertook his internship with Citi in 2006, made a huge impact by explaining the effect the Career Academy programme had had on his career. Since graduating from the programme Daniel has obtained a first class degree and secured a position at Deloitte.

The Career Academy students, who completed internships last summer with employers such as  BP, Citi, JP Morgan and Santander were photographed with Nick Clegg and also met Cabinet Ministers including Vince Cable and Iain Duncan Smith and leading business representatives.

David Walker, Director of Programme and Public Policy said, ‘This was a great opportunity for Career Academies UK to highlight how our programme helps to raise the aspirations of young people, and it's encouraging that this is being recognised at the heart of Government. The students who attended were excellent ambassadors for the work we do and should be extremely proud of themselves!’
