BT London launch event

Thursday 15 April

It isn't every day that students from Tower Hamlets are fortunate to quiz the Great and the Good of BT. And it certainly isn't every day that the likes of Sir Michael Rake, BT Chairman, Lord Michael Hastings, and other BT CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) Board members are fortunate to spend the afternoon with Career Academy students!

To cement a new national engagement project with Career Academies UK, enthusiastic BT Wholesale volunteers from across the country came to the BT Centre at Newgate Street, in March, to host 12 Sir John Cass Sixth Form Career Academy students for an exciting and activity-filled day. Students were given an interactive demonstration of Broadband technology, took part in a trading game and then put two volunteers threw a harrowing set of interview questions, that pleasantly surprised and even stumped the audience! The abundant BT volunteers helped students to discover more about themselves and their ideas as they put the students through a personality test and guided teams of students to pitch marketing ideas around the 2012 Olympics.

The day was a learning experience for all involved, and everyone took a great deal away from the day. Duncan Ivory, a volunteer, commented 'on the energy and enthusiasm' in the room, and that it had been 'great to spend time with students who have such an immense amount of talent,' enabling BT 'to look at themselves in the mirror through the eyes of customers and potential employees.'

Students were all extremely appreciative of a frank and informal networking session with the CSR Board, after which Dame Ellen MacArthur remarked that the flow of inspiration had certainly been two-way that afternoon. The CSR Board members, including Gavin Patterson, CEO BT Retail, were very generous with their time and words of wisdom. Career Academy student, Mehran Ahmed, looked at Dame Ellen and asked 'So you're saying if I want something, I should just go for it?' This invaluable sentiment was taken away by all of us that afternoon. Thank you to our friends at BT for a marvellous day!
