John May - Chief Executive

Trained as a teacher, John has worked with children and young people in a variety of situations, from schools in suburban England to refugee camps in Uganda.  He became a headteacher at 28, briefly holding the dubious honour of being the youngest head in the country, and developed a reputation for regenerating underperforming schools.  In 1999, John joined Business in the Community as Director of Education - a position he held until invited to become our first Chief Executive in 2003.  John is also the primary contact for participating schools and colleges in the South West.  He is a National Teaching Awards judge; a founding director of London's Teach First programme; a member of the World Scout Movement's educational methods group; a Fellow of the Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures & Commerce.

Ruth Griffiths - Programme Director (third from right)
Having managed the Career Academy at Lewisham College, Ruth joined UKCAF in October 2004.  As well as her national programme role, she is the main contact for participating schools and colleges in the North West, the West Midlands, and Northern Ireland.  She also account manages a number of national supporters, particularly those in the accounting sectors.  Ruth has 10 years' experience in education and continues to work with AQA as an examiner for Law and Citizenship.

Martyn is our Chief Operating Officer, responsible for much of the internal organisation of the Foundation.  He joined UKCAF in April 2005, bringing 20 years' human resources experience, mostly in financial services, including Regional HR Director roles in Asia and Europe with a large international banking group.  For UKCAF he has responsibility for the account management of schools and colleges in East Anglia, the East Midlands, Yorkshire and the North East.  He also account manages a number of national supporters, particularly those in the banking and insurance sectors.  Martyn is Secretary for the London Human Resources Group, a leading 'think tank' for HR professionals, and a trustee of several other charities.

Karen Porter - Director of Marketing, Communications and Events

Karen joined UKCAF in November 2005.  She has over 10 years' communications experience in the not-for-profit sector, latterly at the London School of Economics and the education department of Southwark Council.  In addition to her marketing role, Karen account manages our participating schools and colleges in the 'Thames corridor' and elsewhere in the South of England (excluding London).  She also account manages a number of UKCAF's national business supporters.  Karen is the first point of contact for any media enquiries.

Peter Harris - Development Director (not pictured)
Peter has 20 years' experience working in the further education sector, including as a Curriculum Programme Manager, Head of Department and latterly Assistant Principal at Lambeth College.  His particular interest at Lambeth was the development of a vocationally-focused curriculum offer for 14-16 year olds, in collaboration with local schools and employers.  Peter joined UKCAF in May 2006.

Zimbabwean-born, Shelley has been living in the UK for eight years, the majority of these working in the not-for-profit sector.  Shelley was the second member to join the UKCAF team in 2003.  In 2006, she took on the role of London Officer, funded by the London Development Agency.  Shelley has account responsibility for our Career Academies in London and ensures effective delivery of the programme including internships and mentoring.  Shelley is also our official photographer!

After a decade of teaching Secondary English to inner city students in Los Angeles, New York and London, Eric was looking for a different route to help young people.  He joined UKCAF in October 2005 and draws on his first hand experience of academies in the US.

Yvonne Plows - Executive Assistant to the Chief Executive (second from left)
With over 25 years of working in and with educational organisations, Yvonne joined UKCAF in January 2006.

Khaleda Begum - London Administrator (not pictured)
Funded by the London Development Agency, Khaleda joined UKCAF in April 2006, working alongside Shelley Williamson.  Her previous experience includes roles as a PA at a financial company in the City, and more recently as a training advisor.
